The Science Behind Weight Loss

The science of weight loss involves understanding how the body uses energy (calories) from food and how physical activity affects energy expenditure. To lose weight, a person must create a calorie deficit by consuming fewer calories or burning more calories through physical activity, or a combination of both.

The body burns calories through several processes such as:

Basal metabolic rate (BMR): the number of calories the body burns at rest to maintain basic functions such as breathing and circulation

Thermic effect of food (TEF): the number of calories burned during the digestion and absorption of food

Physical activity: the number of calories burned during exercise and other forms of physical activity
